2007 brought more community involvement, more community exposure, and another hugely successful Pride. Internally, we created a new emergency fund to assist GLOSSI members in need, with criteria; we donated to the GISS improve team and became involved with IRQO, an organization to assist GLBT persons in Iran; the first awards were given by a GLOSSI member at GISS (GLOSSI had been involved initially in setting this up, but it was finally felt it was more appropriate if the member did this & was mentioned himself). We sent three members to a meeting at the Unitarian Church to discuss GLBT issues and answer questions. The editor of Out in Canada visited Salt Spring and wrote a wonderful article about the island, mentioning several GLOSSI businesses. Once again we were involved in the Film Festival. Our Pride weekend comprised both international issues and some community enjoyment: Love Beyond Borders: Human Rights in Canada & Iran was our main activity and had a very emotional reception at ArtSpring. The Nylons also performed to a sold out crowd, and we had our first Pride art exhibits, running for the month of September at Barb’s Buns. Our Pride festivities warranted a glowing write-up in XtraWest. Other social activities that were extremely well received: our Karaoke night (many from the straight community took part), and our Spring Fling Hoedown- an evening of square & line dancing (with lessons!) and chili & corn bread.
